What does it mean to work in an abstract manner? How does it feel? What does it look like? The term ‘abstraction’ is used widely across many styles in the art world. The goal of this class is not to work in a style, but rather to find your unique way of translating your gestures into an abstract composition.


This workshop offers a number of different exercises that will introduce abstraction with ease. Each prompt is inclusive of any materials the artist has on hand, will provide tangible tools and methodologies for a healthy studio practice, and encourage playfulness in art making. By the end of the workshop, the artists will create several studies which could be used for a larger painting.


For beginning painters or those who are new to abstraction.


This interactive workshop is limited to 12 students. It will be hosted via a zoom meeting. Registered participants will be sent a direct link to the meeting the day before the workshop.


Instructor Bio:


Amanda K. Hawkins is an award winning painter living and working in Boston, MA. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Montserrat College of Art in 2014 and is currently a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts from Boston University. Amanda exhibits her work throughout New England, teaches painting workshops across North America, and has work in private collections across the globe. She maintains an active blog, sharing her studio practice with over 25K people worldwide. If Amanda isn’t in the studio, she’s likely swimming in the sea or exploring the New England backcountry.

Any mark making material: paint (any type), drawing supplies, markers, etc
6+ Sheets of mixed media paper
Reference photo or small still life to work from
