Topic: Meet PIVOT and learn about the nonprofit’s mission from Founder, Matt Bonds, and Assistant Program Manager, Meg McCarthy

PIVOT is a newly-formed global healthcare NGO establishing a health system strengthening effort in Ranomafana, Madagascar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its aim is to directly relieve unnecessary suffering and death and to serve as a model for health system strengthening for the rest of the country. Modeled after PIH sites in Africa and Haiti, PIVOT collaborates with the Madagascar Ministry of Health in all levels of the local health system— community health, health centers, and the district hospital. PIVOT engages in poverty-alleviation activities, conducts monitoring and evaluation, and has an aggressive research agenda that provides external grants for research.

In addition to support from PIH, PIVOT is affiliated with the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. By bringing this social justice healthcare agenda to conservation biology through a strategic partnership with the Ranomafana-based Centre ValBio of Stony Brook University, PIVOT hopes to also push the frontiers of sustainable development.

The Next Mile Project is a new nonprofit incubator in Boston. The NMP is building an innovative and curated community for nonprofits to share, grow and accelerate the delivery of solutions to the world's most significant challenges.

The community hosts weekly lunch+learn presentations and discussions in their space on Tuesdays at noon. Subject matter experts from every background donate their time to to share their knowledge with member organizations and anyone who would like to join.

Neal Lesh is the Chief Strategy Officer of Dimagi, Inc. He received a PhD in computer science from the University of Washington in 1998 and a Master in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2005-2009, he lived in East and Southern Africa, working on information systems for projects including large-scale AIDS treatment programs, rural hospitals, and research projects. He currently helps lead the CommCare project, an open source mobile application to support extension workers in low-income countries. He co-founded Spark MicroGrants in 2009, an organization that facilitates and funds community-led development.

Spark Microgrants has provided 80 communities with a small grant and facilitation for about five months to plan and implement a public project of their choosing. Communities have built schools, dug wells, started income-generating projects, and many other types of projects. This simple approach provides essential services to needy communities and simultaneously builds capacity and confidence. The projects are sustained due to the community members’ sense of ownership and commitment to support them. The success of this approach offers important lessons for how development efforts can avoid creating dependency and empower beneficiaries.

If you are interested in coming to the lunch and checking out the Next Mile Project's space, please RSVP to [email protected] - we look forward to meeting you!
