In celebration of the exhibition “M. C. Escher: Infinite Dimensions,” MFA Film presents a retrospective of contemporary auteur Christopher Nolan, known for his masterful blending of intricate storytelling with explosive action. Nolan has long drawn inspiration from the mind-bending draftsman, an influence that can be seen in the filmmaker’s frequent use of narrative time loops and infinitely repeating shapes, as well as the recreation of Escher’s impossible staircase in Inception (2010) and the four-dimensional “tesseract” structure in Interstellar (2014). Despite working in very different mediums, both artists have created wildly complex miniature worlds for us to spend hours getting lost in, each blurring the boundaries between science, mathematics, and art.
