Shared Stories: a POC Film Series is a monthly film series presented in collaboration with the Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF), Boston Latino International Film Festival (BLIFF), and the Roxbury International Film Festival (RoxFilm) seeking to build community, conversation, and shared experiences through cinema. This pilot series hopes to create a shared space, to find commonality across experiences, and to encourage the exchange of stories and ideas.
Join us for our first screening where we’re celebrating heritage with Love Boat: Taiwan, a documentary about one of the longest-running summer programs in the world, where college-aged Taiwanese Americans get closer to their history, their culture and each other. Meant for Taiwanese American parents to ensure the preservation of Taiwanese bloodlines, the program acted as a site for romance for young Taiwanese Americans, reflecting Taiwan's history as well as the history of the Taiwanese American community.
The film will be preceded by two short films: “Pozole,” a dark comedy short about a mixed-race Latina woman who must reconcile her family heritage and her vegetarian lifestyle, and “Kwabena,” a touching short documentary about a Ghanian American uncovering a family secret that changes his life.
The screenings will be followed by a conversation with Love Boat Director Valerie Soe and others as we discuss the film to further enrich our cinematic experience and learn from others’ perspectives.
