Lecture: Mills of the Wissahickon, 7:00 p.m.


David Contosta will give an illustrated talk about the mills of the Wissahickon Valley, including their role in the American industrial revolution and their importance to the early economy of the Philadelphia region. He will also touch on the ecological damage done by the mills and the reasons for their demise and final demolition by the Fairmount Park Commission.

David R. Contosta, Ph.D., is Professor of History at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. He is the author of more than 20 books. His writings include studies of Henry Adams, Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin, and America in the Twentieth Century, in addition to the now classic "Suburb in the City: Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia and A Philadelphia Family: The Houstons and Woodwards of Chestnut Hill".


In addition, David has written, co-produced, and appeared in several historical documentaries for Public Television. At present he is working on a cinema quality documentary film about Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Valley, based on a book co-written with Carol Franklin.


His newest book, "America’s Needless Wars: Cautionary Tales of US Involvement in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Iraq", appeared earlier this year.


David has been a Fulbright Scholar in France and a Visiting Researcher at Cambridge University in England. He also lectured at Nanjing University in China and at Pyeongtaek University in South Korea.
