This course provides a beginner’s introduction to robotics, specifically developed for online teaching to home-tutored students. Over the course of four weeks, teens will learn basic programming, engineering concepts, and electronic circuitry design to build and program a simple walking robot and an articulated robot arm using a Raspberry Pi.

Students will move through a series of lessons on how to program a Raspberry Pi computer, Pi camera, servo motors and controller in order to make their robot “walk” or move an arm. Linux operating system, Python and Scratch computer language will be covered during each week and students will apply these language skills to their Raspberry Pi to control motion, read sensors, read camera images on their robots. By the end of the course, students will be able to combine skills learned in each session to create more complex actions for their robot.

Registered students will receive an Artisan’s Asylum Robot Kit that includes a Raspberry Pi computer, a Pi camera, servo motors, a PI (HAT) servo controller, various sensor components and a collection of laser-cut mechanical parts. The kit will include a microSD card with software suitable for robot programming and operation of the Pi out of the box. Depending on the makeup of students and their aptitude levels, the class may progress into the advanced topic of the Robotic Operating System (ROS) which will allow seamless access and control of the robots from a host computer. Parents are encouraged to participate, but not required.

Class Goals
By the end of the class, the students will have learned the following:
– Setting up a Raspberry Pi (PI) as a robot controller
– Setting up and operating the PI camera
– Programming the PI through Python
– Controlling motion control elements through Python
– Reading sensors through Python
– Camera image manipulation through OpenCV (within Python)
– How to build simple robot platforms at home with available materials
– An overview of the Robot Operating System (ROS)
– Setting up ROS on your host computer through a virtual machine.

Online Access
This class will be run through Zoom and a link will be provided 24hrs before the start of the class. Students will need to log into Zoom via a desktop or laptop computer. Students should ensure they have administrative rights to download and run programs onto their computers during the sessions.

Materials Fee
A $150 material kit is required and will be mailed / available for pickup before the start of the class. Please email [email protected] to arrange delivery/pickup and payment. Kits without a Raspberry Pi can be purchased for a discounted rate.

Kits will include:
-Raspberry Pi (2GB)
-microSD card
-Pi Camera
-Pi Hat Servo Controller
-Power supply
-Sensors
-Mechanical parts

Class Dates
Thursdays; 5/21/20 – 6/11/20 from 1PM – 4PM
Registration for this class will close on 5/18 to allow for kits to be shipped/picked up.
