Please join us for the opening reception of Last Days on Earth: the Work of Karen Jerzyk Saturday, February 18th from 8-11 PM.

Jerzyk presents a body of work of haunting, twisted narratives that will be showing from February 18th to March 15th.

A little more about the artist:

Karen Jerzyk is a self-taught, internationally published photographer from the Greater Boston area. After graduating with a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire in 2003, her parents gifted her with her first digital camera to photograph bands.

Jerzyk photographed thousands of bands, concentrating on both live and promotional photos (and occasionally for album covers). In 2009, she started shooting portraits of people, and ultimately decided to concentrate my focus on photographing models.

Karen's trademark of shooting elaborate scenes in abandoned buildings (when she finds a location, quite literally spends hours cleaning up and restoring it to what it may have looked like, paying attention to the smallest details such as placement of items in the room) eventually got her arrested in August 2014- she likes to describe that particular event as "the best thing to ever happen to her", after national news outlets picked up the story. Karen currently travel the US, photographing people for various projects. "

Jerzyk describes herself as "an incredibly introverted, awkward wallflower". In 2011, Karen's father passed away unexpectedly. Her world during and after this event contributed to what is seen in Karen's portfolio today.

"I had feelings and experiences that I would and could never build into words. I realized I had two choices: drown in my own darkness and succumb to depression or push on and fully submerge myself in telling an ongoing story of my internal struggles," she reflects.

Karen Jerzyk strives to produce photos that tell a story- that connect with the viewer on a personal level. She likes to find locations that were abandoned before any sort of technological age, typically locations with relics left in them from 1980 and earlier (the older, the better). Her photos are meant to be read like a book, and looked at and thought about often. There is no "right answer" to the ultimate meaning of any one of her photos, as each viewer can read the scene differently. Karen's goal is for her photos to evoke thought and emotion.

Light refresments will be provided.
