During the renaissance, Spain became the largest empire ever, stretching from southern Italy and Flanders all the way across the Atlantic to South America. No doubt inspired by the grand size of their nation, Spanish musicians composed great music that reflected the many regional styles now incorporated into the empire. Thus among the canzonas, fantasias and dances typical of 16th- and 17th-century Spain, we can also find music in variation style from Naples, Galicia and the African New World. The concert will include several very different settings of “Folias” (“the madness”), and one “Jacaras” (“dance of the ruffian”), as well as a violin sonata by Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer who worked for the Spanish royal family.

Violinist Lisa Brooke is concertmaster of Symphony by the Sea, and she currently plays with Coro Allegro, Arcadia, and New England Classical Singers. She is a founding member of Très, and is frequently heard as a soloist and with many ensembles in Boston and New York. Carol Lewis and Olav Chris Henriksen are also frequent collaborators with ensembles in the U.S. and abroad, including Capriccio Stravagante, the Boston Camerata and Capella Clausura.
