PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Continuing the celebration of its 10th anniversary in Philadelphia, critically acclaimed, contemporary dance company, Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, continues to push boundaries by showcasing its "brilliantly gifted movers and makers" (Knight Foundation).

KYL/D will present three original works by the company’s senior dance artists: Liu Mo, Evalina “Wally” Carbonell and Weiwei Ma, all performed by the KYL/D ensemble. These three pieces will be complemented by the second half of HOME/S. 9th St., one of Artistic Director Kun-Yang Lin’s signature works. The choreography has been restaged from a work originally created for five dance artists to one that includes the company’s entire cast of ten. Through pairing a work expressing immigrant journeys (HOME) alongside the senior dance artists’ individual expressions and inspirations, the concert focuses on the diverse understandings of home, individuality and community. The performances also advance KYL/D’s commitment to nurturing exceptional creativity and the development of the distinctive voices and talents of its ensemble members. The three featured dance makers have been with KYL/D for over four years and have been heavily influenced by Lin’s movement philosophies and aesthetic. “The company’s journey over the past 10 years in Philadelphia would not have been nearly as rich without the extraordinary commitment, passion and talents of Mo, Wally and Weiwei and I am excited to promote their exceptional artistry,” said Artistic Director Lin.

Liu Mo, draws inspiration for his new work from a recent trip to Shanghai. Titled MIÁNJÚ (Mask), Liu’s choreography reflects on human behavior in urban environments, asking: What are the masks we put on in order to succeed in the modern world? What do we end up hiding in the process?

SEED, Evalina "Wally" Carbonell’s new work, illuminates the connections between the growth of a seed and the explosion into being. Drawing from a vocabulary of breath-infused athleticism, the dancers build from small, directed movement into a massive, pulsing life force, coming into being, grounding, rooting, swelling, and sprouting into fullest expression.

Weiwei Ma presents FAN, which focuses on embodying the culture of diverse Chinese fans. Through tracing its history, aesthetic and etiquette, Ma’s choreography also experiments with new movement possibilities with Chinese fans. Embracing the similarities and differences within Chinese traditional dance and modern dance, FAN also emphasizes the two technique forms which play a significant role in Ma’s artistry.

To close the program, Lin brings back a work which premiered at FringeArts in 2015, HOME/S. 9th St. Referencing immigrant journeys, the meaning of "home" and notions of “American-ness”, HOME is informed in part by the stories of residents living along Philadelphia’s famously diverse South 9th Street corridor, where KYL/D’s dance center is located. As they developed a vision for HOME, Artistic Director Kun-Yang Lin and KYL/D's dance artists (many of whom are themselves transplants from abroad) hosted story circles and interviews with local neighbors. Their creative information-gathering became a way to explore struggles for acceptance and justice and sow seeds for healing and community building through the arts.

The fall concert features performances by Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers’ Liu Mo, Evalina Carbonell, Weiwei Ma, Annielille Gavino, Grace Stern, Nikolai McKenzie, Keila Perez-Vega, Frankie Markocki, Kyan Namazi and Barbara Craig.
