Kizuna Dance is pleased to announce its formal Boston premiere performance season. The company presents a mixed repertory concert for six performers, featuring works from across the company’s five year history. All works in the company’s repertory are inspired by various aspects of the Japanese language and culture, ranging from Zen Buddhism to film to the 2011 Tohoku natural disasters. The company’s 2019-2020 season will include E.X.P.L.O.D.E, inspired by the seminal 1988 animated film AKIRA; Rebirth, a hyperphysical interpolation of visual artist Manabu Ikeda’s work of the same name; KYOSHO, the company’s first guest commissioned work by LAJAMARTIN; and a new commissioned work by Hannah Garner. Artistic Director Cameron McKinney’s movement language blends a streetdance background with capoeira and contemporary floorwork to create scenes of organized chaos and structured impulsivity. Cast for the performance includes Rohan Bhargava, Isaac Martin Lerner, Cayla Simpson, Malena Maust, and Mallory Galarza.

Kizuna Dance is an international repertory ensemble that blends streetdance with contemporary floorwork to create dances that celebrate the Japanese culture. The company has performed nationally and internationally at prestigious institutions and festivals such as The Japan Society, Performatica, the Let’s Dance International Frontiers Festival, Middlebury Institute for International Studies, Gibney Dance, and Movement Research, among many others. In July 2019, the company had its French premier at the International Choreographic Festival of Blois on the National Stage, "La Halle aux Grains" in Blois, France. The company will travel to Japan in August 2020 to perform alongside renowned Japanese choreographer Toru Shimazaki’s company Dance Barbizon in showcases for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Committed to outreach, the company engages with every tour location it enters, connecting with community members through post-show discussions, lecture demonstrations, open rehearsals, and masterclasses. Kizuna Dance has lead workshops and residencies in fifteen states and internationally in Japan, Mexico, France, and the UK. Kizuna Dance was founded by Artistic Director Cameron McKinney, whose work has been recognized through fellowships from the U.S.-Japan Friendship Commission, the Alvin Ailey Foundation, the Asian Cultural Council, and through commissions from numerous institutions across the country and abroad.
