A dream turned into reality for northeast native, Julia Russo with the recent release of her first full length album entitled, Hearts in the Water, May 3, 2016. Named after the first track off her CD, the raucous melody explodes with an upbeat, instrument infused number reminiscent of a Mumford and Sons foot stomping ballad. “All I wanna be is by your side and to conquer the tide and together we’ll ride/ with our hearts in the water/our hearts in the water.” This debut project began recording when Julia was only sixteen years old after a compilation of original songs and multiple performances proved too worthy to shelter from public consumption. The album’s artistry unfolds with lush lyrics like the intoxicating Slip Away which delivers a moderate, slow tempo track, a gorgeously understated rendering which hauntingly delivers powerfully in emotional weight. The now, eighteen year old singer/songwriter influenced by artists such as Adele, Mumford and Sons and Head and the Heart brilliantly engages her audience with thought provoking lyrics leaving fans to wonder how someone so young can reach into their hearts and formulate lyrics sung as though arranged just for them.

This emerging Indie artist’s haunting melodies have been well received in venues across New England. The “just- a-girl-a-guitar-and-her-voice” songs, are deep and emoting. Julia tenderly sings about love lost and reflective angst, soulfully. Her ability to find her voice within the songs and the production she has developed around herself is totally refreshing. Inspiring true songwriting artistry is what Julia accomplishes through a poetic literary lens. She sharpens the focus of relationship upheaval as told through the eyes of a young adult, herself, witnessing the pitfalls of “conscious uncoupling” intersecting with warbles about “pulling people through” whatever difficulties they might be having. Her songwriting balances empathy, a desire for connection and the thirst for comfort with immense gravitas and sobering truth. “Go on and go you’re no good I should have known/ go on and go you’re through hurting me…” she belts out over a skillful guitar.

Julia delivers honestly when she picks up her guitar and strums her catchy indie-folk melodies. The sincerity of her lyrics and the blend of music she creates are unique, as her voice radiates truth. Vocally, Julia’s voice has texture that oozes a smokey quality as a compelling songstress. Aesop’s Fables inspired Mr. Lion and another fabulous tune, not yet recorded, but sung in unison by fans as she cries her haunting battle hymns. Julia Russo is breaking the chains as an emerging artist and demonstrating how the reinterpretation of words is a storyteller’s playground and can be twisted and turned into a melodic creation of humble incidents by serving up stories which adds to it the advice to do something or not. Julia describes the songwriting process as such: “the process of song-writing can’t be forced…it resembles an intricate puzzle and makes a story take shape by connecting all its parts. The chorus is like the skeleton, the bridge is the climactic part, and the end….? Well, that’s just the culmination…the finishing touch that wraps it all up. It’s story-telling at its best. For me…it’s just one thought…one sentence that lights the spark…begins the process.”

Effortlessly Julia’s lyrics unfold. The watchful eye she possesses of “life-as we-know-it,” from the eyes of a teen with one foot in adulthood become inspiration for her songs. Her old soul is one that gifts her with the ability to tell stories that resonate melodically with a poignant, confessional style. Her imprint is passionate and raw while maintaining a simplistic acoustical “girl-meet- guitar moment” as she raptures the audience who desire more.

Julia Russo is a young theorist, a wordsmith with a talent for differentiating words and creating contradictions while infusing her style and artistry for all to behold. Undoubtedly, Julia’s craftsmanship as an artist eager to seduce us with her proverbs through song, will have a long career and we will all benefit by the songs she churns out taking us on her journey as a successful musician, the moral of this story is: hard work, talent, professionalism, confidence and skill makes Julia Russo….one to watch.
