I never dreamed it would happen when I started Journeys in Sound, but this is the 100th event in the series. It seems apropos to celebrate with a program that is diverse, which is a reflection of what the series has been since 2013.

Afarin Nazarijou and friends will present a program of largely Persian music that reflects the rich musical heritage of Iran where Afarin is from. Also on the bill is the unique ensemble called SeaSmoke who rearrange music from American traditions through a droning filter drawn from Hindustani music.

Suggested donation $20, $15 for students and those on fixed incomes.
Reserve at [email protected] or call or text 617-276-4536. The exact address will be given when you reserve.

notes on the artists
************************
Afarin Nazarijou is a brilliant, young qanun player from Tehran. For those unfamiliar with the instrument, it is an ancient zither like instrument played in the Middle East but as well as Tin urkey and Greece. Afarin has been steeped in traditional Persian music since she was very young. She has performed several concerts in Europe and played with artists such as Dariush Talaei, Mahsa Vahdat , Siamak Jahangiri, and Negar Kharkan. She has also participated in Festivals such as the Oslo World Music Festival, Ethno Sweden, Forde World Music Festival, and Visa for Music in Morocco. She currently is in Boston studying Contemporary Improvisation at the New England Conservatory.

For this performance, Afarin will perform a program of traditional Persian music. She will be accompanied by Bahar Badieitabar, an oud player who is also from Tehran, and Pouya Shabanpour on tombak (Persian hand drum). Afarin will also perform some music she has been influenced by in her global travels as well as by her time here in the US. Classically trained American violinist, Lucy Little, will also perform an improvised piece with her.

She learned the oud under the supervision of the MIddle East's most well-known oud players including Yurdal Tokcan, Necati Çelik, Mehmet Bitmez, Siavash Roshan and Negar Bouban. She won the first place award of The Youth National Music Festival for two consecutive years at the age of 16 and 17. With her proficiency in a variety of Oud styles, she has managed to develop her musical style, fusing Iranian Classical Music with contemporary techniques. Throughout her career, she has performed in international music festival alongside reputable orchestras. She is currently attending Berklee College of Music under a presidential scholarship.

SeaSmoke are an eclectic ensemble who perform original compositions and arrangements of songs and music in the American vernacular including music by Pete Seeger, Ornette Coleman, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker and others. The group is comprised of Warren Senders (voice & guitar), Lloyd Thayer ( dobro), Vijaya Sundaram (voice & guitar), Junko Fujiwara (cello) and Jerome Deupree (percussion). Their music has an improvised feel and the songs they cover are cleverly and uniquely re-arranged.

Warren Senders is an internationally recognized vocalist, composer and performer who has studied and rendered Hindustani music for over 30 years. His long experience as a Hindustani vocalist transforms the group’s renditions of American song material into entirely new experiences.

Cellist Junko Fujiwara has been performing and advocating innovations in contemporary and improvised music while teaching and maintaining Western classical and jazz traditions over a span of nearly thirty years.

Vijaya Sundaram is a musician and composer with decades of experience as a singer, sitarist, guitarist and songwriter. As a voice actor her poetry readings have been featured on Public Radio International. A former public school teacher and current college professor, she is currently active in Boston-area theatrical and musical performances, including the Christmas Revels,Apollinaire Theater and Bridge Repertory Company.

Lloyd Thayer plays dobro, but will also attempt anything with strings on it. He is also a hermetic underground legend in the place where such things are archived.

Jerome Deupree is best known as the original drummer in the alternative rock band Morphine and after the death of the band's leader Mark Sandman, Jerome played in Orchestra Morphine and Vapors of Morphine. He also spent a considerable amount of time working with the great improvising guitarist Joe Morris.
