Journeys in Sound opens it's fifth season with Night Tree, a group multi-rooted in Celtic/Swedish/Jewish/American Folk traditions coupled with some left-of-center improvisational excursions. The high energy group came together while students at the New England Conservatory and quickly caught the attention of people at the school and in the surrounding community.. NEC selected them as the Wild Card Honors Ensemble for 2016-2017. They have since played the East Coast from Washington, DC to Burlington, VT. Their debut release comes out this fall and is produced by Solas founding member Seamus Egan. The group is comprised of percussionist Julian Loida, a native Missourian, violinist Lily Honigberg, a native of DC, violinist/violist/mandolinist Chis Overholser, who was raised in Lexington, MA, Swedish accordionist & vocalist Sunniva Brynnel, baritone/soprano saxophonist & vocalist Zach Mayer, from New York City, and cellist McKinley James, a Vermont native.

Though each member of Night Tree originates from a different world, the six members have come together to create something new and unique specifically to their instrumentation and musical voices, attracting new audiences and connecting folk music lovers, café radio junkies, jazz enthusiasts, free-improvisation cliques, and beyond.

Fiddler and composer Christine Delphine Hedden hails from the highlands of western Connecticut where her musical adventures had her staying up late to play in New England slow-jam sessions with her father. Her compositional pursuits originated from little songs composed in childhood that later became small works written for the instrumentation of family and friends. She has always been in love in Irish traditional music, first encountering the melodies and the rhythms on the kitchen radio, and then in the eclectic repertoire of New England folk music.

Christine creates a sound that draws upon many wells: traditional, classical, and contemporary.
