When musicians from different cultures come together to create, it can often result in intriguing adventurous music excursions. The artists involved in this program perfectly exemplify that.


DoYeon Kim & Chase Morrin are Gapi, a duo music project that melds cultural styles of Korean and American music.


DoYeon Kim, from Seoul (SOUTH KOREA), plays the gayageum, a Korean zither-like instrument. She comes from a rich background in traditional Korean folk music yet her current music projects are quite multi-dimensional. Over the past few years she has transcribed pieces from musical idioms such as tango, jazz, and Western classical music with remarkable results. An exceptional improviser, her musical vision and ability to adapt music forms not associated with her instrument is truly extraordinary.


Chase Morrin, a native of San Diego, is a pianist, composer and arranger who is well versed in classical and jazz idioms. He has won numerous awards for composition, including several from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He graduated from the New England Conservatory in 2016 with a Masters in Jazz Composition. Besides performing locally at NEC and Harvard University, he has also performed at several festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival as well as well as prestigious venues such as Yoshi's (San Francisco), Jazz Alley (Seatlle) and Dizzy's (San Diego).


Together, DoYeon & Chase create extraordinary unique and collaborative music with rich harmonic landscapes and complex rhythmic grids challenging the traditions of both instruments.

Opening will be a new colloaboration between Brooklyn born baritone sax player Zach Mayer & crossover-style violinist, singer, and composer Tania Mesa from the Canary Islands (SPAIN). Tania just recently performed for Journeys in Sound with flamenco guitarist Andreas Arnold and it was at that show where Zach and Tania met and decided they had some common music interests. Zach and Tania will be performing music with sources that range from the Far East of Europe to the Canary Islands.


Zach Mayer is currently studying at the New England Conservatory and is a member of NEC's Wild Card Honors Ensemble, Night Tree.
Tania Mesa is currently finishing up her studies at Berklee School of Music and is involved with many music projects there as well on the world stage.
