Come join us for in celebrating the release of “Jewelry of Burning Man”, second book by Karen Christians, at the reception for “Where Science Meets Art: Metals & Wearables” exhibition at the Artisan's Asylum, part of Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) Exhibition Crawl being held in association with its 2015 annual conference, May 20-23.

“Jewelry of Burning Man” by Christians is a photo- and story tour of the rich array of ornament crafted over the years for Burning Man, the annual week-long festival that has been held in the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada for the last 25 years, now drawing in 70K participants from all over the globe. This body of work is perhaps unique in that it has been fabricated entirely for the sole purpose of gifting to other participants, unconditionally and often at great expense and effort. Inventive, touching, sometimes simple, sometimes extraordinary, this adornment reflects the shared community values, theme camps, volunteer groups, organizational departments and annual themes based on the event’s Ten Principles. The book tells the stories, themselves moving and sometimes extraordinary, behind each featured piece.

“Where Science Meets Art: Metals & Wearables of Artisan's Asylum” exhibit is curated by Christians, who is the creator and Director of the jewelry department at Artisan’s Asylum, as well as a photographer, jeweler and teacher of jewelry-making herself. She is co-founder of Metalwerx, the 17-year old school of jewelry making in Waltham, and founder of Cleverwerx, a company that fabricates jewelry making tools. A nine-year participant at Burning Man, she has run a popular jewelry camp there, at which she gives classes in resin inlay. She also distributes many hundreds of intricate cast bronze pendants designed and fabricated by lost-wax artist Sumner Silverman and herself. The exhibition continues through June 4th, 2015.

These pendants, along with other jewelry seen in the book will also be on display at the reception. Many come from the private collection of Christine Kristen aka Lady Bee, Burning Man’s archivist and a collaborator on the book. George Post, renowned photographer of jewelry, is responsible for most of the book’s pictures.

“Jewelry of Burning Man” will be available for purchase at the event, and is available for pre-order here:
