Jennifer Kimball is a highly-acclaimed singer/songwriter, Lilith Fair veteran and revered harmony singer. Although she is perhaps best known for her seminal work in the folk-pop duo The Story in the early 1990s, Kimball has travelled an unusual path in the more commonly through-composed career of a touring musician. Her long-awaited third solo record Avocet will be released this coming February and is produced and arranged by avant-pop saxophonist Alec Spiegelman (Cuddle Magic, Pokey LaFarge). Shimmering with elegant instrumentation, Avocet brings us ten Jennifer Kimball songs of unflinching poetry in the face of loss, love and other mid-life subjects like reading, dreaming and bitter truths. Spiegelman’s arrangements eschew the proverbial troubador’s acoustic guitar favoring instead lyrical clarinet lines, pop saxophone, fluid electric guitar and vibraphone. The result is a splendid chamber pop over and through which floats the unadorned and honest voice of a truly literate songwriter; a voice which conveys warmth without affect. The voice of Jennifer Kimball.

In the two decades since Veering from the Wave, (PolyGram, 1998), Kimball has firmly established herself as a crack songwriter and one of the most sought-after collaborators in her home town of Boston. Longtime friend and bandmate, Duke Levine (Peter Wolf, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Story) produced her second solo record, Oh Hear Us (2006) and was an integral part of Maybe Baby, a band in which Kimball and her now husband, Ry Cavanaugh (Session Americana) shared songwriting and fronted together. Maybe Baby’s What Matters (2003) was released just before the birth of their son. Kimball completed a degree in landscape design a few years later and continues to draw landscape plans by hand. In 2010 Kimball started a collaborative holiday-ish music project called Wintery Songs in Eleventy Part Harmony, whose debut cd HARK, she produced last year. The Wintery Songs tour runs locally from December 14-19.

Release date for Avocet : March 3, 2017.

Rose Polenzani was born in the midwest to a musical family, learning harmony at her parents’ knee, hiding out under the family piano; She was always surrounded by music. She began writing songs in college, and left school to start her life as a singer-songwriter. She was discovered by Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, signed to Ray’s Daemon Records for two releases, and spent a decade touring the US, supporting such acts as the Indigo Girls, Over the Rhine, Joan Baez, David Gray, and Freedy Johnston. Though she started as a solo act, collaboration has become the driving force behind her songwriting, as evidenced by her recent work in Wintery Songs in Eleventy Part Harmony, the Sub Rosa collective, and her lush, live-in-studio recordings “The Rabbit” (2011) and “When the River Meets the Sea” (2006).
