Lakou Ayiti is an interdisciplinary production that meditates on the "lakou" and its loss in the Haitian imagination in a way that also speaks to a universal condition. In Haitian Kreyol, the word "lakou" carries multiple meanings. It can mean either home or the idea of home, the place that calls us back to a sense of belonging, without which we are not whole. Award-winning author Edwidge Danticat has guided the creation of the production soundscape that knits together stories of Haitians living in Boston, including Jean Appolon's own immigration story. Our dancers will be performing to an original score created by musician Val Jeanty, incorporating traditional Haitian music and the words of American immigrants telling their stories.
