Jamal Thorne is a drawing virtuoso. His large-scale portraits and fantasies explore what's on and below the surface. He says:
“People and objects constantly oscillate between a number of identities. The changes are largely based on situational elements. For example, we are expected to exhibit certain behavioral patterns in the company of our parents that are not exactly consistent with those we exhibit in the atmosphere of a tavern. The same can be said about inanimate objects. Automobiles are an incredibly convenient mode of transportation until operated by a driver who is under the influence of alcohol. It is both interesting and scary to think about the identity of an object or person dictated by external factors. The idea speaks to the complicated relationships between people, objects and their external environment. In my work, I attempt to explore visualization of an individual’s multiple identities and the different uses or identities attached to objects based on individual interaction.”
Jamal Thorne first learned basic drawing, painting and photography techniques through his experiences as a street artist in the Washington DC area, which he later honed under the tutelage of Guy Jones, Eric Briscoe, Kenneth Royster and others. In addition to the Eliot School, he teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and at Northeastern University's College of Art, Media & Design. His Eliot School classes include Beginning Drawing and Drawing for Pleasure.
