About this workshop:

As one of the three pillars of Data Science, statistics is a critical tool in data mining and machine learning. And yet, many people fear statistics and find it difficult to understand, often giving up on it early on and holding themselves back from growing their careers in data.

This workshop is a hands-on, friendly overview of the fundamentals of statistics for beginners. That means we keep things light on jargon and heavy on plain English explanations and step-by-step examples.

In this class, we will cover essential descriptive statistics concepts and data visualization formats, and apply them in a data analysis project using Python. Additionally, we will review the normal distribution, and learn how to identify it in a data set through visualization and descriptive statistics.

Goals:

After completing this workshop, you will be able to:

- gain an understanding of the role of statistics in Data Science

- understand and compute in Python essential descriptive statistics.

- understand and generate in Python the following types of data visualizations: histograms, line graphs, box plots and scatter plots.

- identify a normal distribution using descriptive statistics and data visualizations.

Prerequisites:

- a basic familiarity with the Python programming language is recommended.

- please install the Anaconda distribution on your laptop before class

- please bring your laptop for this class
