At Nashville North Studios, August 4th Friday Reception, the Artists of South Jersey will be the star as they allow the mystique of Miss Georgia O'Keeffe to inspire them to paint their own way. Our solo artist will be Judy Saylor Allison, who has traveled many times to the land in New Mexico where Miss O'Keeffe made her stand and reinvented herself and her art after becoming a widow. There is something about that area of the world, something that inspires artists to create. The land in this region is laid bare for us to see the Earth as it was carved out from ancient seas, where dinosaur remains can be found beside an ancient seashell. So it is here, at Nashville North Studios, that we will exhibit our explorations that have been inspired by this remote place and a mentor who's influence remains. Photographers surrounded her too: Her husband, Alfred Steigletz, the Father of Modern Photography; Todd Webb; and Paul Strand. The photographers who are showing with us will in some manner be influenced not only by Miss O'Keeffe but also by the men with cameras who surrounded her.
Judy Saylor Allison is a self taught artist who began painting on canvas about 15 years ago, but has drawn since childhood. Her beginnings on the farm and concentration on Nature closely parallel that of Ms. O'Keeffe. "15 years ago when I began painting on canvas, I was doing plant portraiture and then I had a recollection that there was a woman who had painted a skull, so I gave myself permission to try and so began my endangered species series. I thought if it helps the endangered creature that would be good."
Musically, we have a real treat for you! Classical guitarist David Reid Alburger will enchant us with music to which Miss O'Keeffe painted. This August evening will fill your artistic senses both musically and visually! Our light bites that will be available will also reflect those foods found in Miss O'Keeffe's cookbook based on her own garden in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
