Join us for a weekend celebration of indigenous peoples and cultures, in partnership with the Oneida Indian Nation. On Thursday, October 4th, celebrate indigenous voices with an evening panel discussion about contemporary debates over historical memory.
Saturday, October 6th
Michael Galban, curator for the Seneca Art & Culture Center at Ganondagan State Historic Site in Victor, NY, will present his expertise on indigenous “ink” and historical tattooing alongside craft demonstrations.

Location: Oneida Indian Nation Atrium, Level 2
How can we best use objects to tell the stories of the past? The method of employing material culture as a tool for engaging the public about the past can be powerful. Michael Galban will bring Native American objects that become gateways to a deeper discussion of the period of the American Revolution.
2:00 pm - “Native Life and Dress in the American Revolution: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at The Oneida Theater” Presentation by Michael Galban
Location: Liberty Hall, Level 3
The Oneida Nation Theater can be described as a snapshot of Native life during the Revolutionary era. The stories of the individuals highlighted in the film experience are greatly enhanced through careful production and reproduction of the clothing, accoutrements, and physical appearances of the Oneida figures in the theater. Native hairstyles, tattooing, and clothing are all important details that are a type of visual language which can be understood with the right teacher. Michael Galban, Curator and Interpretive Programs Assistant for the Seneca Art & Culture Center at Ganondagan State Historic Site in Victor, NY, will give a behind the scenes talk about recreating the “look” of these figures.
Monday, October 8th
11am, 1pm and 3pm - Performances by Oneida Indian Nation Dancers
Location: Museum Plaza
Dancers from the Oneida Indian Nation will perform traditional Haudenosaunee social dances in authentic dress on the Museum’s Plaza. Throughout the weekend, educators in Revolution Place will lead hands-on art activities and storytelling about Philadelphia’s multicultural roots at a Discovery Cart.
