Panamanian-American artist Katrina Sánchez Standfield explores ideas of play, community, and healing through paintings, illustrations, and tactile soft sculptures called Magnified Weavings. Influenced by her process of mending fabrics with needle and thread and the vivid natural landscapes of Panama, Katrina’s work studies scale, texture, color, and form, and plays on how we relate to our physical environments, ourselves, and each other.

Researching and creating within the “fraught and fruitful” relationship between ancient weaving technology and modern computers, Jovencio de la Paz creates textile weavings through their shared language of binary code. Using a digital Jacquard loom, they manipulate and fracture design software to explore and test the boundaries of how cloth is typically conceived. Pushing design software to the point of rupture, they capture the physicality of these behaviors as the warp and weft of hand-woven textiles.

Meeting from East Coast (Kat) to West Coast (Jovencio), join us virtually as we explore the wide variance in expression within the craft of weaving and textiles.
