During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Philadelphia artist and soldier Charles Willson Peale produced several exhibitions of transparent paintings to celebrate important moments in the struggle for American Independence. Painted on thin fabric or glass, these “scenes” were placed in windows and illuminated with candlelight from behind. The translucent effect was dazzling to viewers.

The Museum of the American Revolution has revived this traditional form of celebration to mark the holiday season and express our gratitude to the generations of Americans who have struggled to secure and defend our Liberty.

Illuminating Liberty is best viewed at night. Admission to the Museum is not required.
