We got the beatz! First Fridays: Beatz features Sō Percussion, a “brilliant” and “mesmerizing” quartet (New York Times) performing on a range of instruments—from drums, deskbells, synths, and bottles to stove burners and a mug filled with spare change. Catch one of their entertaining pop-up shows followed by electrifying beat-machine demos by Get On Down Records. The evening also features exhibition mini-tours, t-shirt making, and DJs Frank White and LayZBoy spinning tunes on the dance floor.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Pop-up Performances by Sō Percussion
Pop-up performances by Brooklyn-based quartet Sō Percussion throughout the museum. Using a combination of traditional percussion instruments, as well as an array of found objects—from flower pots, trash bins, metal pipes, to wine bottles—this quartet crafts inventive and seductive soundscapes to redefine modern percussion. Performances at 7, 8, and 9 pm.

Join Joe Mansfield, author of Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession, Brian Coleman, local hip-hop author and journalist, and other experts in the field for a brief panel discussion on the history of the beat-box machine, its lasting impact on the music industry, and how these machines are transforming music genres still today. Panel discussion begins at 6 pm in the Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater.
