While 1969’s Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice is notable for its groundbreaking commentary on the self-help and free love movements of the hippie era, Mel Stuart’s I Love My…Wife takes a decidedly more retrograde turn. With a wife he is no longer attracted to – along with a newborn and mother-in-law occupying his home – Richard Burrows (Elliott Gould) begins a series of affairs that threaten his marriage. This screening is part of Lightbox Film Center’s special series, Solid Gould: Elliott Gould in the 1970s, a collection of eight classic films saluting the inimitable Elliott Gould throughout April.
