HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands

The HONK! Festival is a revolutionary spectacle of activist street bands that converges every year in Somerville. Since 2006, more than 50 activist street bands -- and thousands of radical musicians -- have come through Davis Square to celebrate the power of brass music to change the world.

These bands use curbs rather than stages, trombones rather than microphones. They play on sidewalks, at political demonstrations, and to support their communities. They fill the streets with horns, bikes, and feet, and they come to Somerville to recharge, meet and play with like-minded musicians, but mainly to have a loud, fun time!

In 2013 HONK! welcomes two new bands from overseas, from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and London, England, plus New Orleans' own Original Big 7 Social Club as special guests to lead this year's HONK! parade.

Pre-HONK! musical performances in Union Square, 7-10 p.m.

Friday, October 11th

HONK! IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS throughout Boston, Somerville, and Cambridge (afternoon)
Bands play with and for community and after-school groups

LANTERN MAKING WORKSHOPS in Davis Square (afternoon)

LANTERN PARADES in Davis Square (evening)
Sidewalk processions around Davis Square accompanied by bike lights, paper lanterns, flashlights, and other forms of DIY lighting.

More than 25 activist street bands, from around the world, perform outdoors for free.

Sunday, Oct 13th

Noon – 2:00pm: HONK! PARADE to “Reclaim the Streets for Horns, Bikes and Feet”
featuring HONK! bands and community groups, from Davis Square to Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest celebration. The parade leaves Davis Square at 12 noon, travels down Elm Street, then Beech Street onto Massachusetts Ave to Harvard Square.

2:15 – 6:00pm: HARVARD SQUARE OKTOBERFEST
HONK! bands perform at the Harvard Square Oktoberfest (www.harvardsquare.com) including Main Stage performances.
