In December 1776, Charles Willson Peale and militiamen of the Philadelphia Associators marched into New Jersey to fight the British and Hessians in a last-ditch effort to preserve the Revolution. “The coat is made short,” wrote one observer of their uniforms, “falling but little below the waistband of the breeches, which shows the size of a man to a great advantage.”
Participants in this workshop will have a coat pattern drafted to their size and learn the techniques and steps necessary to construct this coat. Participants will leave will a partially completed coat and all materials necessary to finish the project. This coat is the basis for some of the Museum’s educational programming, including a muster of Peale’s company in December.
Prior sewing experience is suggested. Cost includes admission to the Museum and lunch each day.
