We will hike one of the 48 4k'. Isolation is known for being second to last shortest and remote. Its open summit offers unique views of Mt Washington as it is in the center of the Presidential Range and Dry River Wilderness.

This hike is rated difficult because of the length and elevation gain. But it shouldn't be a technical hike. So if you have winter hiking experience of 4K' mountains, are in good shape and have a regular exercise routine, you should be good to go. One big advantage of doing Isolation now is the packed snow allowing bushwhacking at a couple of places (Engine Hill cutoff and Iso Express) that shaves off 2-2.5 miles.

distance: 12 mi

elevation gain: 3200 ft

Expectations

I expect you to have previous winter hiking experience in the Whites. This is a long hike, so a regular exercise routine is key. That being said, we will likely end in the dark so a headlamp is necessary.

We will be hiking at a moderate pace of around 1.5 miles per hour. So, if you're looking to go as fast as possible or have difficulty staying together as a group, I do not recommend this hike for you.

The plan is to take Rocky Branch Trail to Isolation Trail to Davis Path and reverse.

Additional expectations

1) I am not a guide and this is not a service - I expect you to be fully prepared with the gear listed below and the mindset that you could get yourself out of trouble if needed.

2) We stick together - this is a group event, so if you feel that you are not flexible in working as a team, this will not be a good hike for you.

3) Parking is limited, so non-carpoolers will be limited.

All listed gear is required. I will be screening everyone going on this hike.

1) Waterproof winter hiking boots (no trail runners or summer hiking boots).

2) Microspikes; Absolutely no tiny studs or anything that does not have multiple sharp pointed edges.

3) Snowshoes (depending on trail conditions)

4) Waterproof and windproof shells for core and pants

5) Layered clothing system; no cotton

6) Insulated jacket (puffy - down or synthetic)

7) Winter Hat

8) Winter Gloves

9) Headlamp with extra batteries or another headlamp (days are much shorter)

10) 2-3 liters of water

11) Snacks and lunch ~2000 calories.

12) Extra clothing to change into after

13) Leg gaiters

14) Copy of the trail map: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/activity-february-7-2022-10-16-am-1e48c44?u=i

Highly recommended

1) Hiking poles (very helpful during descent on snowy / icy trails)

2) Hand and toe warmers

Expectations

Please write your experience once you join if your Ridj-it profile does not have an extensive history.

Hiking 4000 footers in the winter is not an easy task. This particular hike is long and has a considerable elevation gain.
