Hike Mt. Ellen & Abraham - (Car spot needed)

Mount Ellen is a 4,083 foot mountain in the Green Mountains of Vermont with no views on the actual summit, but just a few feet North on the Long Trail there are views from the top of the ski lift. Mount Abraham is a 4,017 foot mountain in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The Long Trail traverses the summit ridge of Mount Abraham. It is the 5th tallest peak in Vermont and was named after the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. The mountain was known as Potato Hill in the late 1800s and this name was stamped on the benchmark of the summit.

On June 28, 1973, a pilot on his way from Twin Mountain, Vermont to Newburgh, New York was trying to navigate through a thick cloud and struck some trees at roughly 3,000 feet elevation on Mount Abraham. He survived the plane crash, but parts of the place still exist on the mountain today. Plane info: Cessna 182N Registration Number N92431.

Distance: 9.4 miles

Elevation gain: 2,379 ft

Descent: 3,197

Car spotting needed for this, otherwise it's an out-and-back of ~17 miles.

Difficulty: Difficult but not killer

Expectations

You must have previous hiking experience with elevation gains of 2,000 ft. Any 4,000 footers done previously (in NY, NH, ME, or VT) are good qualifiers. Hiking abroad starting at higher elevations doesn't mean you acquired a taste of gain; please double check before joining or leave a question in the comment section

Gear (non negotiable)

1) Hiking boots or trail runners (absolutely no sneakers)

2) Multiple non-cotton layers for both bottom and core

3) Windbreaker jacket

4) Non-cotton hat

5) Gloves

6) 2 - 3 liters of water

7) Raincoat
