It's important for all women to know Self Defense. Healthworks Group and Krav Maga Yashir Boston are partnering to bring the entire Boston Community a FREE self defense class on the Esplanade.

Type “Women’s Self Defense” into a search engine, and you’ll return thousands of results – there will be those teaching physical techniques to “defeat any attacker”, devices designed to alert your family and friends in the case of an emergency, canisters of pink mace, and gun holsters that attach to the inner thigh. There will be magazine feature after magazine feature, listing the “Top Ten Tips” to keep you out of harm’s way. While many of these offerings are genuinely well-intentioned, each one often only presents part of the story.

The best way to come out of a violent situation unharmed is to not be there when it happens. This may seem impossible, especially when the media often presents violence as coming out of nowhere, catching us completely off-guard. If we understand that violence is a process, that criminals and predatory individuals engage in, and what the steps/stages of that process look like, we should be able to spot violence before it occurs. We may not have the time to disengage fully from a situation, but even with a few seconds of warning, we will stand a much better chance of getting our physical solutions to work.

Gershon Ben Keren, the head instructor of SEPS (Situation Effective Protection System) Academy and Krav Maga Yashir, teaches a systemized approach to self-defense and self-protection, drawing from his academic background in Pyschology/Criminology, his years working in Close Protection (Bodyguarding), and his years of training in the martial arts (he is a 5th degree Black Belt in Krav Maga). Rather than take a rules-based approach, participants are taught to understand attackers’ motivations and behaviors, so that they are able to make dynamic risk assessments for themselves in order to effectively avoid, or in the worst case, deal physically with an attack as efficiently as possible. The goal is to teach people to be their own bodyguard, using the same strategies the professionals work to, with an emphasis on disengagement from potentially violent situations.

Gershon Ben Keren has offered free, weekly SEPS Women’s Self Defense classes for those aged 15+ for over 9 years. The program runs out of Krav Maga Yashir Boston (200 Terminal St, Charlestown, MA 02129). For more about the program, go to: www.womensselfdefenseboston.com.

This free, hour-long class on the Esplanade will focus on simple physical solutions to common scenarios that women face, along with an understanding of preventative measures. Come alone, or come with friends – no partner required.

Please note, you can sign up for ONE class here which will grant you access to ANY Healthworks Group Summer Series event (with the exception of ticketed classes like Boat Yoga on the Harbor and Goat Yoga on the Greenway)!

You will receive an email from Healthworks Group with an electronic badge that will give you entry to any Healthworks Group Summer Series class. We recommend you screenshot the badge and save to your photo library. Present your electronic badge when you check-in for class.
