Due Donne Productions presents Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel (sung in English) at The Public Library in Brookline. This is a reprisal of the company’s first production, and is cast with students from the New England Conservatory. The performance in Brookline is Sunday December 22ndt at 2PM. An additional performance at the Union Church in Waban is the previous day on Saturday December 21st at 7:30PM. All performances are free with suggested donation.
Hansel and Gretel is the age-old tale of two children getting lost in the woods, only to find a house of candy home to an evil witch. Humperdinck’s opera, written in 1893, features references to German folk music underscored by lush harmonies. One of the most notable moments of the opera is the “Evening Prayer,” sung Hansel and Gretel. The opera is in three acts with one intermission.
The company was created by Celeste Pellegrino and Larisa Bainton, two Masters students at the New England Conservatory. Their mission is to bring opera to the greater Boston community through traveling productions, while also providing performance opportunities for budding opera singers.
