KABINETT is pleased to present “GENERATIONS,” an exhibition featuring recent works by three generations of a remarkable single family of artists: Michael Dolen, Stacey Dolen and Jackie Ingram.  The show will be on view from July 6 through August 18th. The opening reception will take place on July 6 from 5 to 9 pm, as part of the SoWa Art and Design District’s First Friday celebrations. All are welcome!

With over 30 years of experience as a graphic designer, Michael Dolen applies the clarity of that discipline to the sensuous forms and lush colors he employs, creating a unique, engaging body of work. In his mixed media works from 2015 to 2018, muscular forms—only occasionally clearly attached to defined figures—engage with geometric structures, ladders and scaffolds, twisting and interrupting each other in electrifying rhythms. The artist lives and works in New York City. He is the father of Stacey Dolen and grandfather of Jackie Ingram.

In her digital Skinscape and Figurative works, multimedia artist Stacey Dolen mines her personal history with physical trauma and transformative healing to create layered compositions that draw from nature. Underlying themes of physical vulnerability and psychological resilience recur in Dolen’s works that image human anatomy as a vehicle to reflect on processes of birth, growth, death, and regeneration.  Developed from photographs of human skin, the Skinscapes hover on a continuum between abstraction and representation. The Figurative Works are constructed by digitizing original figure drawings from a live model and then selectively replicating and layering all or portions of them, the bodies appearing to either transcend planar space or become trapped there. Fragile and elastic, decaying and regenerating, these two bodies of digital prints render the human form as a terrain for exploration. The artist lives and works in Cincinnati.

Jackie Ingram, now 16 years old, is a rising junior and visual arts major at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio and has been recognized both within and outside school for her talent and effort in fine art. In the summer of 2017, Jackie was employed by Artworks’ Hero Design Company, where she designed, fabricated, and co-created “superhero capes” for children facing medical and/or economic struggles.  In that context, she conducted interviews with children experiencing homelessness to learn their interests and aspirations.  Then, based on the information the children provided, she designed and sewed personalized insignia for a superhero cape for each child.  Digital prints of some of these cape designs are included, together with other recent small drawings and paintings, in GENERATIONS.
