First Light started 17 years ago in Brookline's Washington Square when several businesses came together to spread some holiday cheer by hanging snow flakes in their storefront windows. These glowing flakes illuminated the square, signaling the holiday season is upon us. While the festival has since grown into a Town-wide event showcasing the talents of local artists, musicians and performers, First Light still serves as a reminder that the holidays have arrived.
This year, where First Light normally ends is just the beginning of the gala that will be going on at the Brookline Village Pop-Up Marketplace! Here are some of the highlights you will encounter at 2 Brookline Place at First Light:
* Sina Lightworks: Some of the most awesome neon lightworks you’ve ever seen (or probably never have seen!) will decorate the windows of the pop-up storefronts. Sina Lightworks has exhibited in the U.S. and internationally. Their work is part of the permanent collections of The Bruce Museum; The Morris Museum; Museo de Bellas Artes, Santiago; The Butler Institute of American Art; and the Isetan Museum, Tokyo; as well as in numerous private and corporate collections.
* Six awesome local musical groups will entertain the gathering throughout the evening in our storefronts, including:
5:00 -- The Fenway Quintet (a brass ensemble)
5:00 -- The Splinters (guitar and mandolin duo)
6:00 -- Quartet from the Brooklyn Symphony Orchesta, performing a program of classical masterpieces
6:00 -- Fordham Wilkes (Electronic percussion, including a former member of Blue Man Group)
7:00 -- The folk/rock music group 3 AM
7:00 -- Honey Suckles Jazz Quartet (performs music of Anita O’Day)
* Creative handiworks of dozens of leading Artists and Artisans, all of whose
one-of-a-kind displays will be available for purchase! Included among the exhibiting artists are:
Gary Duehr: Gary Duehr has been chosen as a Best Emerging Artist in New England by the International Association of Art Critics. His work has been featured in museums and galleries including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Exit Art, Umbrella Arts, and New York Arts, New York, NY; Gallery Tsubaki, Tokyo; SKC Gallery, Belgrade; and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana.
Anna Koon: Anna Koon’s A2N2 Gallery has already become a popular destination for Boston art aficionados at the Brookline Village Pop-Up Marketplace, but now something special will be going on. Anna, whose works are gracing the walls of serious art collectors across the United States, is becoming our first Artist-in-Residence, where she will be creating her unique art on site.
WinitzerDesign and DimSum Design: Two of the Boston area’s most acclaimed fabric and multi-media designers.
And many, many more talented, incredible artisans and designers, whose eclectic creations will dazzle and amaze.
