More than ever, technology and economics have put independent film making within reach of just about anyone with a project idea. But the fact remains that for many, the question of how to get a project off the ground, including funding and scheduling - let alone orchestrating the resources and time required to complete a project - can seem like a daunting "black box" of mysterious tribal knowledge. In this 4-session workshop, we'll de-mystify the planning, funding, and production process, and give you the tools and techniques to think like a producer and act like a director to get your story told.

Workshop format: Each Saturday we’ll meet at 10 a.m. in the Somerville Theater’s Microcinema, a comfortable 30 seat screening room. The session begins with a thirty to forty five minute presentation followed by a brief Q and A. Following a short break, we’ll reconvene in a round table format to discuss your project ideas and status. As I coach each of you individually, you’ll see what you’ve got, what works, what needs clarifying, and what you need. The discussion is constructive and real world and lasts about an hour. It’s okay not to have a project. You will by the end of the workshop or you’ll learn from and contribute to someone else’s.

On some days expect industry experts to join our group, sharing their knowledge and experiences in the film industry. Our guest may be an indie producer, a documentary filmmaker, a writer, or a feature film technician. Following the session, at noon, there’s an optional and informal lunch at a local Davis Square eatery. Cost of lunch is not included in the workshop fee.

Why attend?

This workshop is for anyone that’s ever wanted to know how an independent feature length film is prepared, made, and distributed. It’s all about marshaling resources, both human and material, and combining them effectively into an efficient, creative, collaborative endeavor that produces a movie for the public to enjoy, and is fun and rewarding along the way! This is a great networking opportunity for you to meet like-minded people, and is designed to provide ample time for the exchanging of ideas and perspectives which could lead to collaboration on a future project.
