ABOUT THE SHOW:

A prolific and versatile artist, Pinardi taught at UMass Lowell for over three decades, where she encouraged students to live confidently as artists. She passed away in 2010, but her spirit lives on in both the people she inspired and the art she left behind. UFORGE Gallery honors her legacy with this retrospective, highlighting a range of work- from her tonally subdued figures and shimmering mermaids, to sinister monoprints and colorful, eclectic assemblages. During a career that spanned over fifty years, the artist created surreal dreamscapes in paint and assembled media, infused with emotion and wonder. Though often fantastic in subject, Pinardi’s works are relatable in theme, touching on experiences of loneliness, comfort, romance, power, and loss.

This is the first time UFORGE is mounting a full-gallery solo show, having been dedicated to open call group shows since its founding in 2011. Brian Crete, the current owner and
director of the gallery, says, “Following our three-year anniversary, this month marks the end of a transition period for the gallery. We are very excited to take this step forward and offer new exhibit opportunities at UFORGE, starting with our first retrospective. Brenda was my mentor at UMass Lowell and I am looking forward to sharing her amazing work with our community.” Remembering Pinardi, photographer and colleague Arno Minkkinen says, “Watching Brenda teach, as she moved from one student to the next at their easels, like a harbor master checking in on the boats getting ready to set sail, always rethinking and refining until that magic moment arrives when it’s time to lift the sail… it’s how I always imagined Brenda handled the creation of her own work, and why they say the best teachers are the best painters.”

A portion of sales from this month's exhibit benefit the Brenda Atwood Pinardi Scholarship Fund at UMASS Lowell.
