As gene editing techniques become more refined, the possibility of editing the human genome is moving from science fiction to reality. What should we do with this power?
Many in the scientific community are calling for strict regulations on the use of this technology, while others are excited about the possibilities. Should we create babies who will never know disease? Should we stick to smaller changes, like lowering the rates of breast cancer by eliminating mutations? Or should we call for society to ban human gene editing? Who should decide? How can we maximize benefits from these scientific advances while minimizing the harm that might come from them?
Join the conversation with Franklin Institute Chief Bioscientist Dr. Jayatri Das and Dr. Eric Kmiec, Director of the Gene Editing Institute at Christiana Care Health System.
The forum includes a short presentation, followed by a guided discussion on this highly relevant topic among local scientists, researchers, and community participants. The forum is recommended for age 16 and older.
For parents interested in attending, there will be a parallel workshop appropriate for children ages 7-15 on DNA and gene editing facilitated by The Franklin Institute’s science educators during the forum. Parents are invited to register their children for this hands-on workshop while they attend the forum.
Light refreshments will be provided.
The forum and workshop are free with museum admission; advance registration is required as capacity is limited. Call 215.448.1200 or email [email protected] with first and last name along with number of adults and children attending.
