The 2018 global Peace Day theme, set by the United Nations, is “The Right to Peace: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.” However, the 2018 Global Peace Index finds that the world is less peaceful today than at any other time in the last decade. There has also been a global decline in the acceptance of the rights of others. What are the implications of these findings for peace and human rights? What are the main threats to and opportunities for peace today?

Michelle Breslauer, Director of Programs for the Institute for Economics & Peace, will speak on this topic. The IEP is the world’s leading think tank dedicated to developing metrics to analyze peace and to quantify its economic value. It does this by developing global and national indices, calculating the economic cost of violence, analyzing country level risk and understanding positive peace.
