Du Bois Orchestra Free Concert

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- On Friday, April 7, 2017, the Du Bois Orchestra at Harvard will perform a free concert at University Lutheran Church in Harvard Square.
The Du Bois Orchestra at Harvard, founded in 2015, is a chamber orchestra with an unusual mission: to make music a means of overcoming social exclusion. The seminal Harvard sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois, who combined music, sociology, and philosophy to fight for social equity, serves as its inspiration. The orchestra frequently programs works by composers from underrepresented backgrounds, and performs educational outreach concerts and outreach programs for youth in addition to its regular concert schedule.
In addition to Carl Maria v. Weber’s Overture to Freischütz and Ludwig v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, op. 60, this concert will feature Hans Krása’s Overture. In keeping with the orchestra’s goal of performing works by composers from underrepresented backgrounds, Hans Krása’s piece was written in the Theresienstadt Ghetto; the composer later perished in Auschwitz.
The event will include a brief, in-concert mini-lecture entitled “Weber and Krása – Music and Totalitarianism” by conductor Kai Johannes Polzhofer, a Doctoral candidate in the Harvard University Music Department.
The Du Bois Orchestra at Harvard includes musicians from Harvard, New England Conservatory, Longy School of Music, and Boston Conservatory, as well as members of the local musical community.
