In this single-session class we’ll cover the essentials of portraying the face and head in front and profile view, starting with basic proportions, facial planes, and masses. Working from imagination and reference, you’ll learn tips on rendering the features as well as using light and shade to add dimensionality. We’ll also experiment with ways to create evocative imagery that go beyond mere copying. Although creating finished art is not the goal, considerations of composition, focus, line quality, etc. will be addressed that can transform your sketches into fully realized images. All ability levels welcome. Bring black and white media (pencil, pen, Conté crayon, charcoal pencil, etc.) and a sketchpad (9” x 12” or larger), as well as photo reference if desired.
