Boston-based string ensemble Cardamom Quartet presents two concerts to kick off their 2017-2018 season: Disrupting the Canon: Cardamom Quartet performs a concert of music by women.

Cardamom Quartet is an ensemble of teaching and performing artists who build personal connections between their listeners and music through interactive performances and educational programs. The quartet is especially pleased to announce that their upcoming season will focus exclusively on music by women. The norm of concert programs devoid of women composers persists, and Cardamom Quartet aims to challenge themselves, their audience, and the larger music community to imagine alternative realities.

Committed to bringing music to a wide variety of audiences in the greater Boston area, Cardamom Quartet has performed in libraries, art galleries, senior centers, school programs, farmers’ markets, and living rooms. They are recent recipients of a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, have been featured on the courtyard concert series at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square and, in summers of 2015 and 2016, were in residence at Avaloch Farm Music Institute. In 2014, they were the string quartet in residence at El Sistema Somerville, an immersive after-school music program for elementary school students. The quartet’s repertoire ranges from Beethoven to the present day, with an emphasis on contemporary repertoire including original works by composers in the ensemble.

Cardamom Quartet's 2017-2018 season will feature music by all women composers with two spring kick off concerts on Friday, June 16th: an afternoon performance at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University and an evening performance at the Taylor House in Jamaica Plain.

Music by: Gabriela Lena Frank, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Caroline Shaw and Rebecca Clarke.
