Class Description

Learn how to use needle and thread to create cool, intricate jewelry. The unisex bracelet design taught in this class combines a traditional beading technique with unconventional materials—stainless steel hexnuts!—to create a modern, industrial look.

In this online class, students will learn even-count peyote stitch, an off-loom bead weaving technique that can be found in cultures throughout the world—from Ancient Egyptian to contemporary Native American beadwork and beyond. This technique typically uses tiny Japanese and/or Czech seed beads to form a simple and beautiful brick pattern. Hexnuts lend themselves nicely to creating this pattern, but provide a larger, more dramatic scale.

Students will learn how to form the brick pattern, knot the thread, add thread to the in-progress project and reinforce the hexnuts to create a durable bracelet. They will also learn how to use chain nose pliers to open jump rings to add the stainless steel clasp to their bracelet.

Class Goals

To demonstrate the bead weaving technique of even-count peyote stitch and provide students with the knowledge to create a durable flat bracelet and add a clasp with jump rings.
