The Davis Museum’s sculpture of Mary Magdalene reflects the influence of the unusual, naturalistic depiction of the Christian saint first introduced by Donatello in the 1450s. During recent conservation treatment, Davis curators worked with conservator Gerri Strickler to better understand the figure’s original appearance from its polychrome surface to its terracotta form, altered over centuries. Join us for an afternoon symposium—featuring Gerri Strickler (Associate Curator, Objects Conservation, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), Marietta Cambareri (Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), and Lisa Rafanelli (Professor, Department of Art History, Manhattanville College and scholar of Magdalene iconography)—on what was learned through the treatment and technical analysis of this object, its relationship to the Donatello tradition, and its place in the representation of Mary Magdalene within the Christian tradition. The fall “Davis Discoveries” program is presented with generous support from Wellesley’s Friends of Art at the Davis.
