For nearly half a century Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) was America’s foremost sculptor of public monuments. His works are seen in cosmopolitan centers throughout the country. Many of these honor historical male figures: Abraham Lincoln in Washington, The Minute Man in Concord, John Harvard in Harvard Yard and Joseph Hooker on horseback in front of the Massachusetts State House. French was equally proficient at modeling the female figure, especially in its classicizing, idealized form.
Concurrent with the exhibition at the Boston Athenaeum, David Dearinger, the Athenæum’s Curator of Art, takes a closer look at French's fascinating, often allegorical female figures.
Weekend show tickets include all programs.
