Dancing Through It - Expressions of Movement From the Pandemic, hosted by Celebrity Series of Boston, is a pre-event gathering for the upcoming production of Alvin Ailey, scheduled for April 28 - May 1, 2022 at the Boch Center Wang Theater in Boston. Celebrity Series of Boston is inviting local dance community members to share their stories through dance, spoken word, poetry and video at the The Dance Complex @ Canal District Kendall, on Sunday, April 24, 3 - 4:30 PM. The pandemic has changed our lives in so many ways. Boston area dancers, like many artists and Ailey dancers, have used their art form to cope through the long months of the COVID lock-down. Dancers created new work and perfected old moves, and adjusted to a digital space holding rehearsals, lessons and workshops on Facebook live and Zoom. Yet, they remained through their works as they moved through a devastating time that has been transformative for many.

An eagerly-awaited sign of a return to traditions, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has for decades been one of the Celebrity Series’s most popular annual events, and a tradition dating back to 1968. The Ailey company brings back to Boston the power of dance to amaze and connect. New and classic works will appear alongside the company’s most enduring signature work, Revelations. More than a dozen dynamic works will be showcased during the company’s five-performance run, with Boston premieres, new productions and Ailey classics in each performance.

Two Boston premieres based on COVID lockdown-inspired dance films appear on the program: Robert Battle ’s For Four, which captures the pent-up energy of a world cooped up during the pandemic; and Ailey Resident Choreographer Jamar Roberts ’ Holding Space , which examines the experience of isolation, empathy and transformation during crisis. Both pieces were created on video and are seen now for the first time on-stage.

This is a free event and attendees must pre-register. Audience members will be dancers of all abilities, Cultural Activists, and community members in the Greater Boston area.

Capacity limited to 75 people.

All attendees must follow the venue’s COVID-19 protocols.
