Stop by the Mothers Out Front table at the Roslindale Farmers Market to learn about composting and enter our Curbside Compost Contest. Black Earth and Bootstrap Compost are each offering six months of free food waste pick up to winners of the contest.
When food waste goes out with the trash to be buried in landfills, it creates methane, a gas that traps heat and warms the climate. On the other hand, compost made of food and lawn waste enriches the soil, holds water for plants while reducing runoff, and compost slows the release of carbon into the atmosphere, three big benefits for our health and planet. It is estimated that we could eliminate 11% of our greenhouse emissions if we eliminated food waste. Currently, 40% of our food is wasted.
Mothers Out Front is a volunteer organization working to ensure a livable climate for all children. Members will be on hand to demonstrate composting and answer questions about climate action.
