Join us on Monday, January 15 to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and explore how everyone can “Live Like A Hero.” You and your family will enjoy a variety of civil rights-inspired activities, including an inspirational film about another civil rights leader.
This year, we are proud to offer a special screening of Mr. Civil Rights: Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP. The film explores civil rights attorney Thurgood Marshall’s triumph in the 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education. This decision to desegregate America’s public schools completed the final leg of an over 20-year journey to end legal segregation. Marshall won more Supreme Court cases than any lawyer in American history, paving the way for civil rights pioneers like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. The film will be screened twice on MLK Day, at 11:00am and 3:00pm.
Other activities at NLM to help you explore the impact of the civil rights movement:
• Scavenger hunt: Tour the Museum using a custom-made scavenger hunt that lets you learn about Civil Rights era moments throughout Philadelphia, as you take in the stories and artwork in our galleries. You’ll come away with renewed inspiration and a commitment to live like a hero.
• Family Craft Corner: When Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his dream of equality during his “I Have a Dream” speech, millions of people were inspired to help him achieve that dream. What’s your dream? How will you tell others about it? Walk through our galleries for inspiration, and then visit our Craft Corner to create your own speech.
Admission on MLK Day is pay-what-you-wish and all activities are included!
