Join Latino Outdoors in removing an invasive plant from the Mystic River as part of Latino Conservation Week!
Join Latino Outdoors in removing an invasive plant from the Mystic River as part of Latino Conservation Week! Volunteers will head out in canoes to hand-pull water chestnuts from the river.
We will provide life jackets, gloves, canoes and paddles, and lunch thanks to our partnership with Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA). Be sure to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and closed toe shoes that will get wet!

¡Únase a Latino Outdoors para eliminar una planta invasora del río Mystic como parte de la Semana de la Conservación Latina! Los voluntarios saldrán en canoas para sacar a mano castañas de agua del río.
Proporcionaremos chalecos salvavidas, guantes, canoas y remos, y almuerzo gracias a nuestra asociación con Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA). ¡Asegúrate de usar ropa que no te importe ensuciar y zapatos cerrados que se mojen!
About the water chestnut:
Water chestnut is native to Asia, Europe and Africa. In the Boston area though, the plant is harmful to aquatic biodiversity.
It made its way to Boston in 1897, when a Harvard botanist introduced it as an ornamental plant in Fresh Pond in Cambridge. Water chestnuts spread over a river’s surface, crowding out native plants and altering the water chemistry. When the plants die during the fall season, their decomposition draws down the dissolved oxygen which fish and other aquatic animals need to survive. Additionally, the plants get caught in motor boats and limit the use of the river.
If we don’t remove water chestnuts, they will literally take over the freshwater portion of the Mystic River! It’s important that we pull these plants before they have a chance to reproduce so that we diminish the seed bed.

La castaña de agua es originaria de Asia, Europa y África. Sin embargo, en el área de Boston, la planta es dañina para la biodiversidad acuática.
Llegó a Boston en 1897, cuando un botánico de Harvard la introdujo como planta ornamental en Fresh Pond en Cambridge. Las castañas de agua se esparcen por la superficie de un río, desplazando a las plantas nativas y alterando la química del agua. Who:
Ages 6+ are welcome! Youth aged 6-11 may participate under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Youth aged 12-17 may participate without a parent or guardian present at the event but waivers must be signed by a parent or guardian beforehand.
We are capping this event at 30 canoe volunteers and 4 land volunteers.

¡A partir de 6 años son bienvenidos! Los jóvenes de 6 a 11 años pueden participar bajo la supervisión directa de un padre o tutor. Los jóvenes de 12 a 17 años pueden participar sin la presencia de un padre o tutor en el evento, pero las renuncias deben ser firmadas por un padre o tutor de antemano.

What to bring:
Please wear clothing that can get wet and dirty. Bring sunscreen, water bottle, and bug repellent. Life jackets and gloves will be provided.
