Celebrate the world’s most colorful insect during the annual Butterfly and Caterpillar Weekend at the Museum of Science! Learn about butterflies in all stages of life and their importance to local ecosystems through hands-on presentations and the opportunity to see the insects like never before. The Caterpillar Lab will feature caterpillars of all kinds, and with no glass between you and the display, you can experience caterpillars up close — eating, camouflaging, or defending themselves with clever adaptations such as warning coloration, inflatable horns, strange smells, and squeaking mandibles. More interactive programming includes the opportunity to make your own butterfly habitat, learn how scientists study and classify different kinds of butterflies, and a live reading of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar featuring real caterpillars to interact with during story time.
With activities, presentations, and games, there’s something for everyone at Butterfly and Caterpillar weekend. Visitors will also have the opportunity to become a citizen scientist with BioBlitz, an app-based project tracking butterflies across New England.
Join us for a weekend that’s not to be missed!
Butterfly and Caterpillar weekend activities are included with Exhibit Halls admission. Entry to the Butterfly Garden requires a separate timed ticket. Full details on the entire weekend are available here: https://www.mos.org/public-events/butterfly-caterpillar-weekend.
