OUR HISTORY
BYSO has been privileged to serve the youth of Boston through excellent music making since 1958. Over the course of its 60-year history, BYSO has stretched itself to actively participate in the local, regional, and global narrative. As the first independent youth orchestra in Massachusetts, BYSO is an established leader in orchestral music education and performance. Recognized nationally as a model program, BYSO has taken its orchestras around the world, performing in 15 different countries and on 6 continents. Among its 19 international tours, it has collaborated with UNICEF to bring concerts to children in South America, communicated a message of peace and hope to Israel in the days following the War of 1967, and performed for newly reunited Berlin after the destruction of the Berlin Wall. The founding of its Intensive Community Program in 1998 expanded the impact of BYSO to underserved and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in Greater Boston. The partnership it formed in 2014 with the Boston Public Schools has placed BYSO at the forefront of an emerging branch of music education, where music therapy, instrument training, and special education intersect. Demonstrated through its many progressive and influential programs, BYSO’s reputation as an inviting music education organization with high standards and proven teaching practices directly stems from its focus on the success of every child in its orchestras. Teaching a lifestyle of excellence and service through the power of music is its goal – and always will be.
