Join us for Boston’s first Write-in!

Much like sit-ins, where people take up public space to protest and make the case for change, the Boston Write-In will bring together people of all backgrounds for an afternoon of writing and storytelling in support of recent immigrants and refugees. Sharing stories is a uniquely powerful way to see and feel from different perspectives, to build empathy and connection - and stories from those who have been marginalized and who are under attack are crucially important to ensure safety and dignity for all people.

When: Friday, May 19, 2017 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Where: The front steps of the Boston Public Library’s Central Library in Copley Square

What to bring? A story, some text, a favorite poem. Share in groups or at our open mic. Write something new on the spot. We’ll have typewriters, notepads, erase boards, a sound booth.

Partners: Boston Public Library and Facing History and Ourselves

Co-sponsors: The William Joiner Institute for the Study of War and Social Consequences at UMass Boston, the City of Boston’s Office of Immigrant Advancement and Office of Arts & Culture, WriteBoston, The Drum Literary Magazine and the International Institute of New England

Short Program at 12:30: Speakers include Ayanna Pressley, Boston City Councilor-at-Large; Julie Burros, Chief of Arts and Culture for the City of Boston; Eve Bridburg, founder and executive director of GrubStreet; Boyah Farah, a Somali refugee and writer; and Gazmend Kapllani, an Albanian-born journalist and author of A Short Border Handbook.
